Push + Slay: A gala performance by Abdu Ali featuring Schwarz, JLamar, Brandon Soderberg, Joanne Petit-Frere, Lawrence Burney and Bortusk Leer
Reception: Thursday, June 13th, 2013, 8-11pm
The Superchief Gallery at Culturefix is pleased to present a new performance by music artist, Abdu Ali, who specializes in the creation of inspirational musical poetry by the most organic means available in this world of music producers who can lay digital grids like gill nets over anything (and thereby encase everything in taut lines of control).
In the half-year since the release of INVICTOS (November 2012), Abdu Ali has become through constant performances a devotee of el duende, the “Goblin Wind” spoken of by flamenco musicians, a temblor-like onstage emotion that gives a performer tempest energy to push and slay. His pieces are structurally more like fine art textiles -sailcloth. The beats and vocals are woven through each other, inextricable as warp and weft, with all the twists and turns of his poetic designs following their slope. - Johnny Sagan, Program Director, Superchief

Push + Slay will reunite Abdu Ali and the two producers of his first album, INVICTOS (November 2012). JLamar will give a special DJ set and then Schwarz will accompany Abdu in performance of material for his next ep, titled Ambrosia, to be released in the mid summer. Afterward, against the backdrop of London street artist Bortusk Leer’s gallery exhibit, Brandon Soderberg, the SPIN Magazine critic, and Lawrence Burney, XXL Magazine contributor and publisher of the Baltimore music blog True Laurels, and artist Joanne Petit-Frere, will lead a panel discussion on the inspired confluence of hip hop, ballroom, house music, disco, soul and poetry in Abdu Ali’s music.
